蓝志贵于1951年作为摄影记者随十八军进军西藏,中印边境战争爆发时,他是藏字四一九部队宣传科摄影记者。你会怎么做?(财富中文网)“Changeyourthoughtsandyouchangeyourworld.”Dr.NormanVincentPeale“Thoughtscanbewonderfulservantsbuttheymaketerriblemasters.”AttributedtoSocratesIfyourecallthisisablogaboutleadership.Foreveryemergingleaderthereisanaspectofself-developmentandself-awarenessthatcannotbeoverlooked.ThisisthedimensionofPersonalMastery.Butwhatdoes“personalmastery”evenmean?InthisarticleIwanttoexploreadefinitionofPersonalMastery,examinewhatIcall“TheBigLie”andthenlookatsomekeystepsthatyoucanfollowtomovebeyondthelieandfindyourownpersonalpathtomastery.DefiningPersonalMasteryI’mgoingtosuggestthatyouopenyourmindtoanewunderstandingofpersonalmastery;itisprobablydifferentthanwhatyouthought.Mostoftenwhenwethinkof‘mastery’wethinkofthingslikeskillsthatwedevelopthroughyearsandyearsofpatientpractice.Usuallywhenwetalkaboutmastery,wethinkofthingslikesports,music,thesciences,thearts,businessskillsandsimilarexamples.Masteryinanyofthoseareasisaby-productofsteady,unrelentingpractice,puttinginthe“tenthousandhours”assuggestedbyMalcolmGladwellinhisbook“Outliers”whichisastudyofwhatmakespeoplemerely“successful”versus“masterful.”Tomastertheviolin,forexample,youneedtoputin10,000hoursofpractice.But,notmerely‘practice’---practicewithfocusedintentionandpassion.Themindsetofthepersonpracticingandthe10,000hoursareofequalimportance.Butbeyondthemasteryofphysicalskills,thereisanotherkindofmasterythatisdevelopedwithinoneself,themasteryofone’sthoughts.Andforme,itisthesuprememasterybecausewithmasteryoverone’sthoughts,anyotherformofmasteryisgoingtobemucheasier.Itisn’taboutfiguringoutwhichthoughtsare‘right’orwhichthoughtsare‘bad’andthenonlyentertaining‘good’thoughts,thoughthatcanbehelpful.It’saboutdiscoveringtheawesomepowerthatlieshiddeninsideofyourself.Masteryofthoughtbeginswiththeunderstandingofthenatureofthoughtandwhetherweareits’servantorits’master.Theanswerformostpeopleisthattheyhaveunwittinglybecometheservantoftheirthoughts,enslavedbytheirownthinking,withoutbeingawarethatthisisso.TheworstofthesethoughtsiswhatIcall“TheBigLie.”UntiloneuncoversanddiscardsTheBigLie,personalmasteryisgoingtoremainelusive,unattainable,ameredream,outofreach.Regardingthe“howto”ofmasteringourthinking,wewillcomebacktothat.Fornow,justbeopentotheideathatuntilwearemastersofourownthoughts,wewillbecutofffrommeaningfulpersonalmastery.Uncovering“TheBigLie”So,whatis“TheBigLie?”Inshort,itisacorebeliefthathumanbeingsagreetobeforetheyarefiveyearsold.IthasmanyvariationsbuttheessenceofTheBigLieis“Somethingiswrongwithme”or“Iamnotgoodenough”or“I’minadequateandsoIhavetoprovemyself.”Ifyouarehonestwithyourself,youknowaboutthislie…and…manypeople,mostpeopleinfact,believeitisthetruth.Asaresulttheyspendmuchoftheirlifeenergytryingto‘prove’thattheyaregood,adequate,capable,worthy,lovable,etc.Butremember…itwasalietobeginwith…so,whydopeoplespendsomuchenergytryingtodisproveit?Becausetheybelieveit,deepdown,atanunconsciouslevel,and,overtimehavelostawarenessofthisbelief.Soyouwillask,ifbeingwrong,inadequate,unworthy,incapable,flawed,defective…arealllies…thenwhatisthetruth?I’mgladyouasked!Thetruthisthateachpersonispowerfulbeyondmeasure.Eachpersonisalreadyperfectatthemomentofbirthwithallthegoodnessandworthinessandresourcestheywillevenneedtoachievemasteryintheirlives.TheyreceiveafreegiftfromtheUniverse:everyoneiswholeandvaluable,andthatneverchanges.ButbecauseofTheBigLie,theyhaveunknowinglyabdicatedtheirpowerwhentheyagreedwiththelie,andthenforgotaboutit.YoumaythinkofTheBigLieasa“thoughtgenerator”becauseitliesinthecoreofyourconsciousness.Fromtimetotime,thoughtsappearinyourconsciousnessandahighpercentageofthemwillbemirroringyourbiglie.Atthesametime,thoughtsseemsocompellingandreal,youseldomchallengethem.Weactuallythinkourthoughtsare‘whoweare.’No,theyarenot.Wearetheonewhohasthethought.ButuntilwediscardTheBigLie,itismoreaccuratetosay“ourthoughtshaveus.”Throughaninnocentmistake,longago,wehavesimplyfallenintoatrapofbelievingTheBigLieandasaresultwespendourlifeenergystrugglingagainstitandthemorewestruggle,likebeinginquicksand,thedeeperwesink.Whenyoudigyourselfintoahole…thebestthingtodoistostopdigging!But,amazingly,whenwearenotawareofTheBigLieoperatinginthebackground(liketheOSofacomputer)wewillspendmoreenergyprovingitistrue,provingthatwearerightaboutbeinginadequate,tryingto‘fix’ourselves,andverylittleenergydealingwiththerealissue:gettingridofthelie!Here’sthegoodnews:intheend,TheBigLieisjustathought,aconcept,abelief,andabstractionandhasnopowerexceptthepoweryouhaveloanedtoit.Likeanyotherthought,itcanbe,rejectedanddiscardedandreplacedwithmoreusefulthoughtsofyourchoosing.Thebestnewsofcourseisthatthereisnothingwrongwithyounowandthereneverhasbeenanythingwrongwithyou.TheUniversedoesnotmakejunk.Here’stheCatch:TheBigLieshowsupinyourthoughtsinamyriadofformsthatmayseem‘real’unmaskedtoyoubecauseyouhaveentertainedthelieforsolong,itseemslikereality.Seeingthis,youcantakeactiontogetonthepathofpersonalmasteryoveryourthoughtsandfalsebeliefs…if…youarewillingtopracticetheartofattention…focusingyour
